School Bus Safety &Your Child
  • Leave home early enough to arrive on time at the bus stop. Dress properly for the weather.
  • If you must cross streets on your way, obey all traffic signals and signs. STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN before crossing
  • Never play along the way to your bus stop. Never talk to strangers. Never get in a car if someone offers you a ride. Do not walk if you ride a bus to school, ride your bus. Do not take gifts from strangers.
  • Always wait for your bus in a safe place, back from the road.
  • Remain quiet and still at the bus stop. Do not play, someone could get hurt.
  • Stay away from the bus until it stops and the driver signals you to board. Enter in single file without pushing or shoving.
  • Take a seat right away and remain seated facing forward.Keep your hands, arms, and legs inside the bus.
  • If you drop something near or under the bus, DO NOT PICK IT UP, tell the driver or another adult and they will get it for you.
  • Help keep the bus neat and clean. Keep your books and lunch out of the isle and away from the emergency exit. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus.
  • Be courteous to the driver and other students. Sit quietly with your hands to yourself, and never shoot or throw things. Always listen when the driver speaks.
  • Get off the bus carefully. Take five giant steps away from the bus and out of the danger zone, until you see the driver and the driver sees you.
  • Never walk in the danger zone close to the bus where the driver can't see you.
  • If you cross the road when you get off the bus, STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Make eye contact with the bus driver. WAIT UNTIL YOUR DRIVER GIVES YOU THE THUMBS UP SIGNAL FOR YOU TO CROSS SAFELY.
  • After school be sure to get off the bus at YOUR BUS STOP. GO DIRECTLY HOME. DO NOT PLAY ALONG THE WAY.

Chapter 90 Section 14
When approaching a vehicle which displays a sign bearing the words SCHOOL BUS and which is equipped with front and rear alternating flashing RED signal lamps which are flashing and the vehicle is stopped to allow pupils to alight from or board, a person operating a vehicle SHALL, except when approaching from the opposite direction on a divided highway, bring his vehicle to a FULL STOP before reaching the school bus and shall not proceed until the warning lights are deactivated, unless directed by a police officer duly authorized to control the movement of traffic. Any person who violates the provisions of this law SHALL be fined not less than two hundred dollars.($200) A second or third subsequent conviction shall be reported forthwith by the court to the registrar who shall revoke immediately the license or right to operate a motor vehicle.
